조선의 예술은 백성들의 삶과 정신을 담아낸 거울이자, 시대를 초월한 아름다움을 간직한 문화유산입니다.
그중에서도 북한 황해도 지역에서 생산된 해주 백자는 조선시대 후기에 꽃피운 독창적인 도자 문화의 정수를 보여줍니다.
해주 백자는 간결하면서도 우아한 조형미와 담백한 색감이 특징이며, 서민들의 실생활 속에서 사랑받아 온 생활자기로서의 가치를 지니고 있습니다.

해주 백자는 조선 후기 민화와도 깊은 연관성을 갖고 있습니다. 조선 후기의 민화는 형식에 얽매이지 않고 자유로운 구도와 친근한 소재로 백성들의 희로애락을 표현한 예술 형태였습니다.
해주 백자의 소박한 아름다움과 실용성은 이러한 민화의 정서와 닮아 있으며, 특히 대담한 붓터치로 표현된 간결한 문양과 자유로운 장식 기법은 민화의 특징과도 맞닿아 있습니다.
이러한 점에서 해주 백자와 민화는 조선 후기의 실용적 미감과 민중 문화의 정수를 공유하는 예술적 형식이라 할 수 있습니다.

이번 전시는 해주 백자의 독창성과 조선시대 민화와의 관계를 조명하고자 기획되었습니다.
해주 백자의 다양한 형태와 문양을 통해 그 속에 깃든 조선 후기 민중들의 생활과 정서를 살펴보고, 민화와의 예술적 교감을 탐색하는 자리가 될 것입니다.
바라건대, 이번 전시가 해주 백자의 미적 가치와 역사적 의미를 새롭게 조명하는 계기가 되기를 바라며, 조선 후기 민중 예술의 따뜻한 감성을 함께 나누는 시간이 되기를 바랍니다.

Korean art is a mirror reflecting the lives and spirit of its people, a cultural heritage that transcends time with its beauty. Among them, the Haeju white porcelain (Baekja) produced in the Hwanghae Province of North Korea represents the essence of Korea’s unique ceramic culture that flourished during the late Joseon period. Characterized by its simple yet elegant form and subtle color, Haeju Baekja was cherished as a practical and beloved part of everyday life.
Haeju Baekja is also closely linked to the folk paintings (Minhwa) of the late Joseon period. Minhwa, known for its free-spirited compositions and familiar motifs, expressed the emotions and aspirations of commoners without being bound by rigid artistic conventions. The unpretentious beauty and functionality of Haeju Baekja resonate with the spirit of Minhwa, especially in its bold brushwork, simple patterns, and decorative techniques. In this sense, both Haeju Baekja and Minhwa share a deep connection as artistic expressions of the practical aesthetics and popular culture of late Joseon society.
This exhibition seeks to highlight the uniqueness of Haeju Baekja and explore its relationship with Minhwa. Through a diverse collection of Haeju Baekja’s forms and motifs, visitors will gain insight into the daily lives and sentiments of people from the late Joseon period while appreciating the artistic synergy between these two cultural traditions.
We hope this exhibition will serve as an opportunity to rediscover the aesthetic and historical significance of Haeju Baekja, offering a space to share the warmth and artistic sensibility of late Joseon folk art.
